Ask E.T.: Thinking and Paper: "I like to think that I have - over the years - devised a personal operational work system that combines the benefits of both chaos and organisation. It is completely paper-based, although I have had a computer on my desk since 1982.
It is actually a fully-specified system but I won't go into all the details, just the core bit. Everything coming in is printed or noted on paper. That paper is then slipped into one of say a dozen clear plastic folders which are kept in a tray (sometimes two or three) called Work in Progress. One of those files may otherwise be in a tray called Current Task. Paper from the folder in Current Task (but only that folder) can be scattered all over the desk in whatever order or chaos best serves to carry out the task in hand. If the task is interrupted for more than a phonecall then all the paper goes back in the folder, the folder goes back in Work in Progress - and another folder becomes Current Task. As the folders fill up they are culled: in effect I use a kanban system to restrict their size. Since paper is filed in the plastic covers loose in the order in which is was last looked at, it is an easy matter to take out the bottom half of each file, flip through it for anything archival (not much, usually - that's what we have computers for) and drop it in a Xerox box under the desk. Anything not looked at for a month in the box gets dumped.
The beauty of the system is that everything scattered on the desk is current (so no hunting around for things that might be missing) and the fact that once a week I can skim-read every piece of paper in the files (1000 to 2000 pieces say) in about thirty minutes and pick up dependencies, connections, forgettings, omissions whilst the file is held in my short-term memory for that half-hour.

GPS and Director MX: "GPSy is a software interface for a variety of GPS receivers including Garmin. GPSy is AppleScriptable, meaning that the data it captures can be passed through AppleScript to other applications, such as Director MX. Although GPSy currently runs in the Classic MacOS, it has no difficulty communicating with USB ports under OSX. But GPSy must be configured to receive the GPS data correctly from the serial port. The settings in this example are:

My first task in marrying the iBook and eTrex was purchasing the proper cabling, and the cavemen from prehistory who make GPS data cables still work with 9-pin serial ports. That would be great if this was 1997, but nowadays most Macs are strictly USB and Firewire. So i needed 1) a GPS data cable that ran from the back of the eTrex to a female 9-pin serial connect and 2) an adapter to plug that 9-pin serial into a USB port. "

Etech and SXSW used to be quite similar, with one a bit more technical than the other, but I think this year they really diverged. Etech felt a bit weird this time around, much less hackery and technical and much closer to what I assume conferences like PC Forum or Web 2.0 are about. The long story short is that Etech suddenly seemed to be about money. Everyone talking about getting or giving angel funding, dropping tips on talking to VCs, and half the crowd sported gray hair and suits instead of fauxhawks and cargo pants. It was odd. The cutting edge geeks at etech have always pushed code and potential product trends but it seems the bubble is back and the money guys have wised up, and they descended this year to check it out. In this year's money-ified etech, Joshua from delicious seemed like the last unfunded, unincorporated guy with a great idea and he was the belle of the ball. I saw him get mobbed after every talk, surrounded by what appeared to be VC types."

SchoolTool - Using SchoolBell With iCal: "Apple's iCal application uses a simple model for sharing calendars. One person 'publishes' a calendar. Only that person can modify that calendar, and they must do so using that instance of iCal. As long as that's the case, everything works fine, and other people can 'subscribe' to the calendar, view it, and receive updates.
SchoolBell's model is more complex. More than one person can be given permission to edit a given calendar. Sometimes SchoolBell will automatically add events to a calendar, for example, when a person makes a reservation for a resource, the reservation is added to their personal calendar.

Playing Video-CD's on PlayStation with Demo One: "Okay, heres my prob. I got the avi2str thing, uncompressed the video, yaddayaddayadda. But then when i go to convert, i keep getting the 'unknown error' message. I've tried like 5 diffrenet ersions of virtualDUB, like a billion different video's, redownloaded the avi2str thing like 3 times, and even tried all te cpompatibility options (i got xp home), but still, unknown error. some videos will convert, but only the first few thousand frames. I got the gameshark which i happen to use as my modchip, cheating device, and str player all in one, but i cant get the stupid program to work. Anyone else got any advice or have fixed this prob? Oh ya, for those who want my iso of my gameshark, buy it on ebay folks cuz i aint sendin it. And for those of you who keep sayin give up on the project, go bother someone else, i hate when people come into boards and just post crap that doesn't help anyone and for the most part is just not true. anyway, for those of you still loyal to this, keep up the good work and if u find out how to fix the prob, send me mail, k. The Transition from Graduate School at a Research University to Teaching at a Small College: "Even though I had been teaching for eight years before I came to Warren Wilson, I found that I still needed pedagogical advice and emotional support from my new colleagues. My dean, my chair, and the other members of the English department have had a good sense of how to be supportive without being overbearing. The orientation for new faculty members before the first week of classes was essential. It was especially helpful that my dean invited well-adjusted second-year professors who were able to speak honestly about the joys of teaching here and about the difficulties they had faced during the previous year. My dean also established informal weekly lunch-time conversations about teaching. It is important for younger faculty members to talk to one another and to hear twenty- and thirty-year teaching veterans explain their pedagogical techniques and their solutions to classroom problems. It is also important to hear that veterans continue to have difficulties with students and that they continue to modify their teaching techniques. Another issue in the adjustment to a new job is that junior faculty members sometimes fear the real and imagined differences in values and entitlements that separate them from their senior colleagues. That fear is minimized or becomes virtually nonexistent in a department where everyone is asked to teach the same course load, as we are at Warren Wilson, and where junior colleagues are encouraged to participate fully in departmental decisions, as I am. It has also helped that senior colleagues speak candidly about the faculty evaluation process and that my school issues a document that explains in detail the review procedure.
Still, I have had some difficulties adjusting, and I have sometimes felt overwhelmed. It is hard to prepare several new courses at once, and one's first semester teaching five days a week and teaching twelve credit hours is bound to have its vicissitudes. I also had never experienced faculty meetings and committee work. And it is tough when new hires haven't finished their dissertation, which I hadn't. Although I had assured myself that I would be finished before moving to North Carolina two summers ago, I did not, as it happened, defend and deposit until the following May."
