The Day Come: "The photographer was hilarious. He was this tall, blonde guy, probably in his early twenties, a big-shot, and ‘enthusiastic,’ which was code for “totally annoying and freakishly cheesy.” Before I go too far into our adventure of picture taking, I must describe to you the shoes us girls were wearing. We were in three inch, zebra print, pointed toe stilettos that were not made for hiking. Not to mention wearing nylons with them, a skirt, and an overly large sweater with a puke green undershirt. "

Q&A: Ellen Ullman / Programmer turned novelist talks about computers, writing and the world we live in: "The Bug has several code samples in it, and I found that to write
even such short routines, I had to imagine the shape of the whole system
they were part of. And, immediately, I slipped right back into the coder's
mind-set, hours going by in a kind of ferocious anxious humming. It was
hugely pleasurable; it was exhausting. I soon found I was using code to
avoid writing -- oh, I'll just fiddle with this little section here -- and a
whole day would go by without my having written a scene or a line of
dialogue. So I had to put the code aside."

Gordon's Tarantula Care Sheet
: " Personally I prefer buying tarantulas as young spiderlings, this way you have all the pleasure of watching your spider grow, you can collect the skins as it moults, and if you buy a text telling you how, set the skins to look almost life like, giving a series of permanent images of your pet."

BGG Thread: Making a copy of FMP from the files...: "Use a roller cutter or a chopping cutter to get the counters to be the exact same size. Clip the corners for a neater look. Then, once cut, spray a coat of Krylon Matte varnish--a couple light coats won't run the inks at all, even with ink jet printing. I prefer to use a matte photo paper for really sharp, nice-looking images on the counters. You'll end up with a very professional looking game."

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "This procedure can bring practitioners in difficult situations, e.g. when no embryos are available for transfer and a mock transfer has to be carried out to avoid the patient to suspect that he/she is a carrier and the lack of embryos is due to the fact that they are all affected."
eMedicine - Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis : Article by JJ Marik, MD: "Definition

PGD combines recent advances in genetics and reproductive medicine. For PGD, the early embryo is examined after IVF for inherited diseases or to determine the sex of the embryo for sex-related genetic disorders. The process starts with a basic IVF. When the embryo is at the 6- to 8-cell stage, 1-2 cells (blastomeres) are removed and sent to the genetic laboratory for diagnosis using either polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques, depending on which disease is being sought. The unaffected embryos are then transferred into the mother's uterus.

In certain situations in which the genetic problem is only with the female, a polar body can be removed from the eggs and tested before fertilization."
What is a designer baby?: "dvanced reproductive techniques involve using InVitro Fertilisation or IVF to fertilise eggs with sperm in 'test-tubes' outside the mother's body in a laboratory. These techniques allow doctors and parents to reduce the chance that a child will be born with a genetic disorder. At the moment it is only legally possible to carry out two types of advanced reproductive technologies on humans. The first involves choosing the type of sperm that will fertilise an egg: this is used to determine the sex and the genes of the baby. The second technique screens embryos for a genetic disease: only selected embryos are implanted back into the mother's womb. This is called Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)."

Teaching a Visual Rhetoric in Freshman Composition Classes: "Were they applying current marketplace practices or mimicking the rules of the academy? There was no generalization, no carry-over of skills from one genre to another. If we say that what we are really teaching our students is critical analysis and written communication skills, then we fail if we don't teach them to generalize their writing for their specified audience. Electronic writing operates under a different set of rules, offers a new kind of literacy. We must teach our students to both understand and transcend the traditional form, to mold it for the electronic space, thus creating a variant which considers the electronic audience addressed, and his or her expectations as reader/ learner."

Hoopty Rides: Is the Complete New Yorker Spyware?: "Copy Issues to Local Hard Drive Issues Folder - This is a more elegant solution. Oddly, although the Complete New Yorker is locked up in twenty different ways, it relies on a public domain database called SQLite. There is an Issues table in the database that has the complete list of every issue along with corresponding DVD number. Each issue is assigned a number 1 through 8 plus 9 for the harddrive. If you copy every djvu issue file to the local issues directory and change the issues table so that every issue points to the local hard drive (9), then you can scream through the issues. It is fast like the blazes. So elegant and beautiful. I downloaded a shareware SQL database manager off CNet to make the changes, but individuals smarter than I could do it with the free command line SQLite."

Rules of Card Games: Chinkway: "The Origin of CHINKWAY

Having invented a number of games, some of which have been published, I considered that the ultimate challenge for any self-styled 'games inventor' was to invent a good game that could be played with normal playing cards (as opposed to special cards). Because our group has favourite cardgames for 3, 4 and 6 players I decided that my aim should be a game specifically for 5 players."

SALON Features: David Foster wallace, page 2: "It seems to me that the intellectualization and aestheticizing of principles and values in this country is one of the things that's gutted our generation. All the things that my parents said to me, like 'It's really important not to lie.' OK, check, got it. I nod at that but I really don't feel it. Until I get to be about 30 and I realize that if I lie to you, I also can't trust you. I feel that I'm in pain, I'm nervous, I'm lonely and I can't figure out why. Then I realize, 'Oh, perhaps the way to deal with this is really not to lie.' The idea that something so simple and, really, so aesthetically uninteresting -- which for me meant you pass over it for the interesting, complex stuff -- can actually be nourishing in a way that arch, meta, ironic, pomo stuff can't, that seems to me to be important. That seems to me like something our generation needs to feel.

History of Springville, Utah: "Aaron Johnson led settlers to Springville in 1850. Mormon settlers displaced Native Americans and relegated them to an 'Indian Farm,' located on poor ground, unfit for farming, at the mouth of the Spanish Fork River near the Utah Lake. Mormon settlers developed subsistence farming for fewer families than was hoped, due to lack of water. Some Springville farmers turned to hauling freight from California twice a year. Following the Civil War in 1865, other farmers turned to raising cattle and sheep. Completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 made rail shipment of stock to market possible, so stockmen used more intensive grazing practices. The railroad also helped make mining products profitable, and many mines started to be developed. Beginning in 1878, Springville merchant Milan Packard built a railroad to bring coal from Scofield to Utah Valley. The Rio Grande Railroad bought out the line in 1882."

The 48 Laws of Power: "Infection: Avoid the Unhappy and Unlucky

You can die from someone else’s misery – emotional states are as infectious as disease. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The unfortunate sometimes draw misfortune on themselves; they will also draw it on you. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead."
