Moodle Wiki - Step By Step Install Moodle On Macintosh
A Whole Features: South by Etech recollections: "Etech

Etech and SXSW used to be quite similar, with one a bit more technical than the other, but I think this year they really diverged. Etech felt a bit weird this time around, much less hackery and technical and much closer to what I assume conferences like PC Forum or Web 2.0 are about. The long story short is that Etech suddenly seemed to be about money. Everyone talking about getting or giving angel funding, dropping tips on talking to VCs, and half the crowd sported gray hair and suits instead of fauxhawks and cargo pants. It was odd. The cutting edge geeks at etech have always pushed code and potential product trends but it seems the bubble is back and the money guys have wised up, and they descended this year to check it out. In this year's money-ified etech, Joshua from delicious seemed like the last unfunded, unincorporated guy with a great idea and he was the belle of the ball. I saw him get mobbed after every talk, surrounded by what appeared to be VC types."

Radio College | Reading Room: Articles: "I decided to call my friend Reese Erlich, a radio freelancer and university lecturer who lives in Oakland, California. Reese had once told me he makes a decent living from freelancing and had offered to tell me his strategy. He didn't appear to be wasting away from carrot-eating syndrome so I thought he might know something about carrots that I didn't.

The phone call that day was a pivotal point in my life and has led to everything that I have done since in public radio (including starting Radio College) because it enabled me to stay in the field. Reese gave me an idea: a simple idea and not a new idea, but the idea which got me on my feet financially.

'I would strongly recommend meditation,' he says in a jokey, Indian guru accent. But he means it. He sees things so much more clearly these days. He knows that he wouldn't have been able to create the work he has done without the drugs, but he says he is still suffering the consequences. 'I know when I meditate I'm still dealing with the effect of the drugs. Kids play around with them without realising they have serious effects that you have to deal with for the rest of your life. They think it's casual, recreational. And we have this wonderful gift to be aware, to analyse, to perceive, to remember, and we just fuck with all that ...'"

The New York Times > Sports > Albuquerque Regional: First Final Four for Louisville Since 1986: "When Louisville blocked a shot by J. D. Collins with seven seconds left in regulation and the score tied, and Dean missed right before the buzzer, Pitino charged onto the court as if his team were already on the way to St. Louis for the Final Four.

'We're definitely going to win,' he said he told his players. 'I see it. I know it.'

When asked after the game why he was so certain, Pitino said, 'That might have been the only mistruth.'"

SchoolTool - Using SchoolBell With iCal: "Apple's iCal application uses a simple model for sharing calendars.  One person 'publishes' a calendar.  Only that person can modify that calendar, and they must do so using that instance of iCal.  As long as that's the case, everything works fine, and other people can 'subscribe' to the calendar, view it, and receive updates.

SchoolBell's model is more complex.  More than one person can be given permission to edit a given calendar.  Sometimes SchoolBell will automatically add events to a calendar, for example, when a person makes a reservation for a resource, the reservation is added to their personal calendar.

SchoolTool - Architecture: "SchoolTool takes a different architectural approach, aiming to create a freely distributed, reliable and adaptable platform for schools all over the world.  The first design decision, and perhaps the most important, was to use Python as our programming language.  Python is an open source, dynamic, object-oriented programming language.  Its design and syntax stress rapid development, simplicity and clarity.  It is a both a good first programming language and appropriate for large complex systems.

Zope 3 is a complete re-write of Zope, the popular web based web application server.  It has several characteristics which make it particularly well suited to SchoolTool's requirements.  A major design goal of Zope 3 is the implementation of a component architecture which facilitates re-use and re-configuration of pieces of larger applications.  This means that if, for example, schools in a certain country needed to create a specialized assessment system, they could fairly easily swap in their own gradebook component without having to re-write the entire application.  The component architecture also facilitates integration of other Zope 3 components, such as wikis and other content management systems.  Zope 3 has a strong workflow and process definition framework which has many uses in school administration.  It has excellent support for internationalization and unicode.  For these reasons and more, Zope 3 is particularly well suited to SchoolTools need.

The Transition from Graduate School at a Research University to Teaching at a Small College

: "Even though I had been teaching for eight years before I came to Warren Wilson, I found that I still needed pedagogical advice and emotional support from my new colleagues. My dean, my chair, and the other members of the English department have had a good sense of how to be supportive without being overbearing. The orientation for new faculty members before the first week of classes was essential. It was especially helpful that my dean invited well-adjusted second-year professors who were able to speak honestly about the joys of teaching here and about the difficulties they had faced during the previous year. My dean also established informal weekly lunch-time conversations about teaching. It is important for younger faculty members to talk to one another and to hear twenty- and thirty-year teaching veterans explain their pedagogical techniques and their solutions to classroom problems. It is also important to hear that veterans continue to have difficulties with students and that they continue to modify their teaching techniques. Another issue in the adjustment to a new job is that junior faculty members sometimes fear the real and imagined differences in values and entitlements that separate them from their senior colleagues. That fear is minimized or becomes virtually nonexistent in a department where everyone is asked to teach the same course load, as we are at Warren Wilson, and where junior colleagues are encouraged to participate fully in departmental decisions, as I am. It has also helped that senior colleagues speak candidly about the faculty evaluation process and that my school issues a document that explains in detail the review procedure.

Still, I have had some difficulties adjusting, and I have sometimes felt overwhelmed. It is hard to prepare several new courses at once, and one's first semester teaching five days a week and teaching twelve credit hours is bound to have its vicissitudes. I also had never experienced faculty meetings and committee work. And it is tough when new hires haven't finished their dissertation, which I hadn't. Although I had assured myself that I would be finished before moving to North Carolina two summers ago, I did not, as it happened, defend and deposit until the following May."

When the 'new' of the Jornada finally worn off... I attacked two of the Jornada's $30 serial cables to reduce their 'carry weight' with the following findings that may be of interest to other techies.

Connector pins are as follows (note, colors should, but may not match) The Jornada connector had no visible number or start markings, so the Jornada pin numbers below are looking into the unit (female) opening with the Jornada face up and counting from left to right.

There is one tiny clue that can provide valuable information for both the serial and power connector. The Jornada internal connections are gold plated traces directly on the Jornada motherboard, and using a good light and magnifier, you can see that one connector on the serial side and one on the power connector is a fraction of a millimeter longer than the others. These two connections are signal ground and power minus on the theory that these pins will connect first and provide a ground safety.

The Jornada pins 1-4 are USB and most, but not all, of the remainder for serial with pin 4 being used by both serial and USB (The only visible marks on the connector and shell are 'DDK Thailand A')

t r u t h o u t - House Bill Attacks 'Leftist' Professors, Allows Students to Sue over Beliefs: "Tallahassee - Republicans on the House Choice and Innovation Committee voted along party lines Tuesday to pass a bill that aims to stamp out 'leftist totalitarianism' by 'dictator professors' in the classrooms of Florida's universities.

The Academic Freedom Bill of Rights, sponsored by Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, passed 8-to-2 despite strenuous objections from the only two Democrats on the committee.

The bill has two more committees to pass before it can be considered by the full House.

While promoting the bill Tuesday, Baxley said a university education should be more than 'one biased view by the professor, who as a dictator controls the classroom,' as part of 'a misuse of their platform to indoctrinate the next generation with their own views.'

The bill sets a statewide standard that students cannot be punished for professing beliefs with which their professors disagree. Professors would also be advised to teach alternative 'serious academic theories' that may disagree with their personal views.

According to a legislative staff analysis of the bill, the law would give students who think their beliefs are not being respected legal standing to sue professors and universities."

Sound Proofing: "The first thing to understand about sound proofing is that it can never be accomplished in a car. The important thing is that you can reduce the amount of external noise, and vibrations. Sound proofing will make any car feel like a million dollars. A quieter ride, less distraction, and an overall more comfortable environment are what you can expect when you start sound proofing your car. For car audio enthusiasts, this topic is critical. Nothing will lose points faster, or spoil your sound more than a resonating panel, or vibrating frame member.

Sound Proofing starts with some means of damping. A number of products are available for this, and they all have various degrees of effectiveness. The best results are always obtained from using a combination of these products. There are mats, sprays, foams, and insulation available from a number of manufacturers "

Amazon.com: Electronics: SOUND DEADENING SHEET 10"x10": "Product Description This multi purpose, noise reduction material actually absorbs the vibration of any solid material. It is made of a mineral filled asphalt polymer that transforms vibrational energy into thermal energy (low level heat). The flexible nature of the damping sheets enables it to mold and conform to irregular surfaces. They can be cut using a standard razor knife and are self adhesive for easy peel / stick application. Can handle continuous temperatures -30? to 350? F. Thickness: .070'. Automotive You can reduced interior noise levels 3-10 dB by applying the damping sheets to the door panels, firewall, floor pan, trunk lid or any interior sheet metal panel. Top performers in car audio competitions know that a reduction of 3 dB in the interior noise level is like doubling your effective amplifier power! Installing damping sheets will improve the total ride quality of any automobile! Home Theater Can be used as a constrained layer between two sheets of drywall (sheetrock) to reduce wall resonance and control noise and vibration in home theater and Hi Fi listening rooms. Speaker Building Perfect for lining the interior of your speaker cabinet. It will help reduce cabinet resonances and standing waves. Can also be used as a constrained layer between two pieces of wood."

Photographing Book Pages: "Greetings. I am relatively new to digital photography. I am using a
digital camera (Canon PowerShot A80, 4.0 megapixels) as a scanner (for
OCR-ing), and it is working like a charm (much faster than a flatbed
scanner). However, whenever I take a picture of a page from a book
(with MACRO selected), the white page comes out somewhat gray
(definately not what I expected: that is, black print on a white
background). I am taking pictures in outdoors, that is, my camera is
set up near a window where there is adequate sunlight. Could someone
please tell me which functions I should adjust or select so the white
pages come out, well, a lot whiter? Thanks.

Hi Rebecca. The same thing happens if you photograph anything that's mainly
light coloured and bright, like snow for instance. The camera's meter
assumes an average scene, and under exposes. If your camera has an exposure
compensation function, sometimes also called 'EV adjustment', set it to 1
or maybe a little more and see what the results look like. A bit of trial
and error is needed here.

Correct, and it also can be corrected in post exposure processing.
Increase the contrast and brightness.

Ancestry.com - Low Budget, High-tech Genealogy: "Bound books present another challenge because Jim does not want to unbind any of the books that remain intact. Likewise, he doesn't want to damage the pages or the book binding by placing the book on the flatbed scanner. The first books he scanned were already unbound, but to continue the project he needed a book scanner. Unfortunately, a professional book scanner costs about $50,000. There was no way the county could spend that kind of money, so Jim built his own!

Using construction grade plywood, Jim built a cradle with adjustable, hinged leaves to support the large ledger books. He erected a simple metal shelving unit in his office, and added four fluorescent lighting units extending beyond the periphery of the shelving. Next, he clamped a wooden arm across the top of the shelf on which he had placed the book cradle and securely attached the digital camera to it. To hold the book page flat while photographing it, he used a clear piece of Plexiglass.

Jim's first attempts at photographing book pages were frustrating because there was a distinctly visible reflection on the Plexiglass in the pictures. He tried adjusting the positions of the fluorescent lights without success.

'I finally figured it out,' he laughs. 'It was the reflection of the ceiling light in the office. Once I turned the light off when photographing, it worked just fine.'
The light from the four 'book scanner' lights is sufficient for doing his other work in his office while photographing book pages. Unfortunately, though, he has already worn out the remote trigger for the camera with all the images he has taken.

The page images from the camera are captured in .TIFF format and then transferred to the computer's hard drive. Corel Photo-Paint is used to rotate and crop the images. During that process, the images are named for the pages they represent and saved as .GIF files. They are also run through the program script, but each image must be manually adjusted for brightness, contrast, intensity, and gamma. Each image is then viewed online to make sure it is as readable as possible. When Jim is satisfied that he has a readable image, he releases it to the ColdFusion program for creation of the HTML. Like the scanned image files, these .GIF images are also archived to CD-ROM."

LLT Vol9Num1: COMMENTARY: YOU'RE NOT STUDYING, YOU'RE JUST...: "YOU'RE NOT STUDYING, YOU'RE JUST PLAYING THAT SIMS™ GAME OF YOURS

For many adolescent language learners, the suggestion of playing an edutainment software title unfortunately conjures up images of simplistic space invader games, re-programmed to solicit foreign language vocabulary before being able to be able to shoot at a screen of sketchily drawn aliens. For students in a class only because of a mandated requirement, the temptation to forego all educational value for a modern software title instead designed solely to be entertaining is far too enticing. Upon a closer look, however, some of these same entertainment-focused titles possess much of the basic content desired in an educational title. For example, if we look at the number one selling game (Croal, 2003) The Sims, we see a lot of the same content one might find in an introductory language textbook."

The Pencil in Japan: "A word on Sharps (mechanical pencils)
Japan has been the most innovative when it comes to the mechanical pencil. You do not have to go to Tokyo to find out. KSG Stationery in San Francisco's Japantown imports the mechanical pencils sold only in Japan. The designs are a work of art. They are normally white, pink, light-blue and green with wire clips and sometimes a bellows around the push-button. I'll admit they appear to be for school use and are shorter than what is normally sold in the US. I recommend a visit to KSG if you ever find yourself in San Francisco. Oh yes, you might also want to check out the Cable Cars and the Golden Gate Bridge if you have any time left over :)

Life in San Francisco, Chinatown, California, stories, pictures, travel experiences ..: "I pondered the day's journey as I sat in the dark talking with strangers. I realized then that tourists who seek the enchantment of Chinatown should do as I had done - wander about without the restrictions of an organized walking tour, and certainly without the confusion of my self-inflicted haphazard path. Much of the day's enjoyment had come from the excitement of blazing my own trail through a new and fascinating land.

Just then, a man dressed in a business suit at the other end of the bar briefly joined in our conversation. He said that the old market area moved from Grant Avenue to Stockton Street after the tourists moved in. 'It used to be more interesting in the old days,' he said in a tone of somber reminiscence. I imagine if Lewis and Clark were alive today, they would whole-heartedly share that sentiment."

How do I catch a newspaper thief? | Ask MetaFilter: "As a general rule, as long as the paper isn't delivered too early, you can ask you newspaper delivery to give a quick knock or ring your doorbell when they do the delivery, so you can make sure to grab it right away. (This works better if you've already tipped them well during the holidays.)

If you want to discourage the behavior without having to pounce on it every morning, the tried-and-true solution is to wait for the paper to be delivered, slip in a note to the effect of 'I know who you are', leave it back out in the corridor and hope that works.

Depending on the brazenness of the thief, though, that may not really work. I had a good friend whose family lived on the same block in DC as Felix Bloch, who was arrested for espionage. For an entire summer, while they were making a show of keeping him under surveillance, the street was lined with Secret Service cars--all US-make sedans, with two guys in the front seat, wearing shades and engines idling for the AC all day long. The big problem for the residents was that every morning, the agents would just get out of their cars and take the sports sections out of every paper on the block. I stayed with them for a week while this was happening, and every morning you'd walk down the street, and there are 12 cars, with the guys just sitting there reading your sports sections. What're you going to do--call out a Secret Service agent for stealing part of your paper?"

Beehives and Buffalo Chips 212 :: The Daily Herald, Provo Utah: "Beehives and Buffalo Chips 212

The Daily Herald

Buffalo Chip to Eagle Mountain for trying to regulate who can speak about city issues. The city declared that only the mayor and city manager may speak to the press. This gag order is supposed to keep honest employees from blurting out sensitive information, such as details of the Miss Eagle Mountain pageant.
Restricting city employees from speaking to reporters is an affront to the First Amendment, and the people of Eagle Mountain should not stand for it. It's often a whistle-blower who points out something they ought to know. Besides, Mayor Kelvin Bailey is certainly not a credible source of information. He faked his own kidnapping and lied to police. If he'll do that, he'll lie to the press and to his constituents. Why is he still in office, anyway?"
